Bends
Digital and Print Publication
Length: 1:29
Two-page accompaniment with visual and poem
March 22, 2014
Bends is a fully inclusive sound piece specifically designed for Jim Draper and Staci Bu Shea’s inaugural Wild Application publication, an interdisciplinary, single themed art book featuring selected local and national artists.
The concept word was “knees” and I immediately thought of a field recording I captured of my grandmother praying on the night of her 90th birthday. When I was younger, we would kneel beside the bed together to deliver our nightly prayers. Now, in her frailer physical state, she foregoes this ritual and lies in bed when praying.
To compose the piece, I built a delay pedal and small amplifier. During playback, I used circuit bending to manipulate my Gram's voice, supplying the “bend” that her knees couldn’t provide. To accompany the song, I paired it with a poem and a visual of a twisted, tarnished flute, representing the decomposition of both the physical state and of the captured sound.

"Wild Apples is a curatorial and publishing initiative led by artist Jim Draper and curator Staci Bu Shea. Under this title, we facilitate various forums to consider root and core notions of naturalism, specifically in regards to the confluence of cultural manifestations and our understanding of natural systems. We will disseminate collected material and research through printed publications, exhibitions, programming and digital media.
We’ll be using vocabulary inspired by nature to explore a larger web of concepts. This first issue of Wild Application is a printed publication the size of a long pocket wallet and the mot du livre is knees."
